The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is funded through the Department of Health to improve the health and wealth of the nation through world-class research. Established in 2006, it has increased the volume of applied health research for the benefit of patients and the public, and the speed with which discoveries are translated into tangible benefits for patients and the economy.
The Institute has developed and supported practitioners working in health research. In particular it has supported the growth of clinical research nursing and the development of a career structure for nurses working in this growing specialty.
Key NIHR aims include:
Attracting, developing and retaining the best research professionals to conduct people-based research;
Commission research focused on improving health and social care;
Increase opportunities for patients and the public to participate in, and benefit from, research;
Promote and protect the interests of patients and the public in health research.
